What are colonialism's historic and ongoing impacts on the enjoyment of human rights by lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender-diverse persons?
The United Nations Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity is planning to prepare a report on the intersection between colonialism, sexual orientation and gender identity. The report will examine the past and present colonial regulation of sexual orientation and gender identity through laws, policies and practices, and will account for the different measures adopted to recognize and provide reparation for its impact.
To this end, the Independent Expert opened a call for submissions to gather relevant information on the historical and current repercussions of colonialism on the enjoyment of the human rights of LGBT people.

ILGA World is collecting information on this issue in order to prepare a joint report. Specifically, we are looking for concrete examples to understand how colonial legacies continue to affect LGBT people today (from statistics, laws and policies, concrete cases, testimonies, etc.). Additionally, our report will have a regional approach, prioritising information from Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa.

For ILGA World’s joint submission, we will prioritize answering questions # 3 and 7, which focused on colonial laws and social and moral practices that are still today, as well as questions # 9 and 10 to identify good decolonising practices in your regions. However, if you have information on any other question from the questionnaire, your contributions will be most welcome.
