ILGA World seeks four Junior Professional Consultants in the areas of:
- UN Programme: Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs
- UN Programme: Human Rights Council, UPR and national engagement
- Research
- Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics

- with dedication to - and experience in regard to communications and to supporting campaigning for the human and social rights of persons of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC)

The main target group for the International Junior Professionals Programme are persons who are at an early stage of their career. The junior consultancies in the International Junior Professionals Programme replace ILGA World’s internship opportunities that we offered in the past. As an international programme, any person may apply except those living in Switzerland.
Outline, responsibilities and conditions of the Junior Consultancy positions
These are exciting opportunities to join ILGA World, the global LGBTI membership-based organisation with more than 1,700 member organisations in over 160 countries.
The Junior Professional Consultants will provide assistance to ILGA World’s staff.
This means:
- The Junior Professional Consultant on Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs will work with UN Programme and report to Kseniya Kirichenko, UN Programme Manager
- The Junior Professional Consultant on UN Human Rights Council, UPR, and national engagement will work with UN Programme and report to Gabriel Galil, Senior Programme Officer (UN Advocacy, Human Rights Council and UPR)
- The Junior Professional Consultant for Research will work with and report to Lucas Ramón Mendos, Research Coordinator
- The Junior Professional Consultant on Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics will work with and report to Chamindra Weerawardhana, Senior Programme Consultant (GIESC Programme) or to Aelien Rubashkyn, Programme Consultant on intersex human rights.
Tasks and requirements for all Junior Consultancies:
All candidates should
- have a particular interest in and commitment to LGBTI/SOGIESC human rights;
- have experience (paid or unpaid) in NGO work, in community or grassroots organising, advocacy or other activist work -preferably in the LGBTI sector;
- be well organised, motivated and able to work remotely;
- have a good internet connection during the Junior Consultancy;
- have a very good level of written and spoken English;
and preferably should also:
- speak and write in another UN language at a good level.
Specifics to each Junior Consultancy
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- organise notifications of ILGA World members on the upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, and SDGs
- collect, organise and support internal database of Treaty Bodies’ and Special Procedures’ practice on SOGIESC;
- compile quarterly reports on Treaty Bodies’ sessions, analysing recommendations and preparing video materials;
- support drafting and delivering statements for dialogues with Special Procedures;
- support drafting submissions to Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures on particular topics;
- attend, either in person or virtually, Treaty Bodies’ and Human Rights Council sessions and other relevant meetings;
- provide support in the development of training materials on Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs;
- carry out organisational and administrative tasks to support the programmes.
Candidates should
- have basic knowledge of the United Nations human rights system;
- possess good research skills in law, policy, social sciences or a relevant field;
- pay attention to details and have the willingness and ability to work with large amount of data and information;
and should preferably also
- have direct experience of engagement with one or more human rights mechanisms, especially Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures, and/or SDGs;
- have knowledge or experience on intersectional forms of discrimination, including gender, disability and/or race, and
- have a good level of written and spoken Spanish.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- draft reports for Human Rights Council sessions, and the Universal Periodic Review Working Group sessions
- compile recommendations made during the UPR Working Group sessions
- support the SOGIESC UPR Advocacy weeks
- support notification of ILGA World members on the upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to the UPR, Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs;
- provide technical support to defenders engaging with the Universal Periodic Review
- attend Human Rights Council and Universal Periodic Review sessions online
- support research on follow-up and implementation of UPR, Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs recommendations
- provide technical support to defenders engaging with Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures, supporting drafting shadow reports and other submissions;
- assist ILGA World’s UN Programme staff in the development of new activities
- carry out organisational and administrative tasks together with other UN Programme staff members.
Specific additional requirements for the Junior Professional Consultant on Human Rights Council, UPR and national engagement:
Candidates should
- at least have a basic understanding of the UN mechanisms gained through study, work or other experience in the UN system
and should preferably also
- experience of direct engagement with the UN UPR, HRC, Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and/or SDGs.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- assist the Research Coordinator in managing, organising and maintaining ILGA World’s Database;
- assist ILGA World’s Research Coordinator in conducting desktop research on SOGIESC legal issues.
- assist the Research Coordinator in managing, operating and maintaining internal tools for media monitoring and documentation.
- prepare and drafting background notes and briefs;
- convene and moderate meetings with contributors, translators, designers and other partners, and following up on their work with ILGA World;
- carry out organizational and administrative tasks to support research needs.
Specific additional requirements for the Research Junior Professional Consultant
Candidates should have
- strong research skills on legal issues related to SOGIESC and human rights;
- the ability to independently conduct complex legal issues and present research findings in an organised and methodical manner. High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
- awareness of the cultural nuances and community developments in language and concepts relating to sexual orientation and around gender issues;
- proficiency in handling substantial amounts of research of data. Organised and methodical data management, updating and storage;
- basic knowledge of citation methods;
- competency in working with partners: building and nurturing key relationships;
and should preferably also
- previous experience in paid or non-paid legal research work;
- knowledge of international human rights and refugee law;
- participation or authorship in one or more legal publications, preferably on SOGIESC issues.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
- support the Senior Consultant to the GIESC Programme [SC GIESC] in strengthening the trans and intersex human rights portfolios of the organisation
- support the SC GIESC in organising key events such as the Trans Advocacy Week and /or Intersex Advocacy Week
- work with the SC GIESC in developing GIESC-related research and dissemination initiatives
- work with and support ILGA World’s Trans and Intersex Committees and their Chairpersons
- work with the SC GIESC in organising trans and intersex human rights-related events
- support trans and intersex rights defenders in engaging with UN mechanisms such as Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, UPR, HRC
- support the Programmes Team staff in relation to issues pertaining to gender identity/expression and sex characteristics
- carry out organisational and administrative tasks together with other UN Programme staff members.
Specific additional requirements for the Junior Professional Consultant on Gender Identity, Expression and Sex Characteristics
Candidates should
- be well connected to GIESC activists and organisations globally
- have a good knowledge of intersectional feminist approaches to the promotion of gender justice
- have an understanding about how GIESC rights and indigenous people’s rights intersect
- have good knowledge on issues pertaining to sex characteristics, and intersex justice
- have worked for, or volunteered with, gender identity/expression and/or intersex-led initiatives, groups or organisations.
Junior Consultancy conditions
- The Junior Consultancies are virtual; no relocation to Geneva is expected or supported by ILGA World
- The Junior Consultancies are six-months long, and require a full-time commitment for their duration (37.5 hours/week). Working hours arrangements are flexible.
- The Junior Professional Consultants will be expected to work from their current location
- The Junior Professional Consultants will receive a compensation of CHF 750 per month for the duration of the consultancy
- The successful Junior Professional Consultants will have opportunities to work with representatives of LGBTI organisations from around the world and other NGOs virtually and/or in Geneva
- Due recognition will be given in publications and activities which the Junior Professional Consultants have contributed to.
