More and more, our common challenges of security, development and human rights are being framed in terms of how we respond to diversity.

Exclusion – whether based on gender, gender identity or expression, race, religion, sexual orientation, language, disability, culture, migration or refugee status, or economic standing – is frequently identified as a root cause of conflict, underdevelopment and the violation of human rights. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly apparent that inclusive approaches that respect and embrace diversity are proactive, preventative, sustainable strategies for peace, sustainable development and respect for human rights.

This interactive discussion, convened by the Government of Canada and moderated by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, will provide an opportunity to reflect on how to mitigate the various costs of exclusion as they apply to the three UN pillars of human rights, peace and security, and development.
