ILGA World seeks a Senior Programme Officer: UN Special Procedures and Sustainable Development Goalsto develop its UN advocacy and policy work in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as to lead our engagement with UN Special Procedures. In addition, the position will also include leading ILGA World’s engagement on the thematic of Business, Workplace and LGBTI Equality.

The position
ILGA seeks a Senior Programme Officer: UN Special Procedures and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs and SPs) to develop its UN advocacy and policy work in the context of the SDGs, as well as to lead ILGA World’s engagement with UN Special Procedures. In addition, the position will also include leading ILGA World’s engagement on the thematic of Business, Workplace and LGBTI Equality.
ILGA’s advocacy and policy work in these contexts is highly collaborative with our members and LGBTI human rights defenders from national level and seeks to connect national level activists and global level UN human rights mechanisms. The successful candidate will have to be able to navigate diplomatic, government, civil society and UN spaces alike. The person will work in close collaboration with the UN institutions, permanent missions, other civil society actors and activists on national level – providing technical and other assistance to them in the context of UN mechanisms.
The Senior Programme Officer report to the Manager of the UN Programme.
The ideal candidate will start working on 1 January 2022.
- Develop and implement a strategy on SOGIESC-focused advocacy and policy work in the context of SDGs, including:
- Identifying opportunities for SOGIESC inclusion in SDGs processes;
- Identify and address thematic opportunities for SOGIESC advocacy in the context of SDGs;
- Provide technical and other support to ILGA World members and other groups participating in SDGs processes, such as in the High Level Political Forum and in Voluntary National Reviews, including by supporting CSOs reporting on SDGs at regional and the global levels;
- Develop and implement training courses, conduct research write and publish guides and other materials on SDGs;
- Represent ILGA World in meetings of NGOs and other stakeholders in the context of SDGs, such as the LGBTI Stakeholder Group;
- Collaborate with other actors on global in the context of SDGs
- Lead ILGA World’s engagements with UN Special Procedures, including:
- Monitor, collect and share with ILGA World members and other groups information about upcoming opportunities related to UN Special Procedures;
- Provide technical and other support to ILGA World members and other groups engaging with UN Special Procedures, including through country visits, communications and statements for interactive dialogues;
- Write and submit, in coordination with ILGA World members and other groups, inputs to UN Special Procedures thematic reports;
- Coordinate preparation and delivery of statements for interactive dialogues with UN Special Procedures;
- Monitor, collect, systematize and analyse UN Special Procedures’ references to SOGIESC, and write and publish reports and other materials based on this analysis;
- Identify and address thematic opportunities for SOGIESC advocacy in the context of UN Special Procedures, including with a focus on business and human rights;
- Develop and implement training courses on UN Special Procedures;
- Maintain relations with UN Special Procedures mandate holders and OHCHR officers supporting their work;
- Contribute to organization of side events with participation of UN Special Procedures by ILGA World;
- Represent ILGA World in meetings on UN Special Procedures with other NGOs, diplomats, UN officials and other stakeholders;
- Collaborate with other actors on global level in engaging with the UN human rights system with a focus on UN Special Procedures.
- Carry out some tasks related to the functioning of the SDGs and UN Special Procedures components of the ILGA World’s UN Programme, such as: participating in meeting with donors and partners, planning and budgeting and reporting.
- Represent ILGA World in spaces addressing business, workplace and LGBTI equality, including engaging with the ILO, the UN Forum for Business and Human Rights and other occasions.
- Carry out other UN related activities as agreed with the Director of Programmes and UN Programme Manager.
- Attend conferences, seminars and meetings on behalf of ILGA World.
- Work as a part of the ILGA World staff team.
- The Senior Programme Officer is required to work from ILGA World’s head office in Geneva
- ILGA World operates under the flexible working system, that among others include flexible working hours and flexible remote work arrangements
- The weekly working time is 37.5 hours on a 100% position
- ILGA World remunerates under a salary matrix structure. The annual salary being offered for the post is CHF 76,800 based on a 100% position based in Geneva
- In addition, ILGA World offers 25 days annual leave, an annual Geneva travel pass and a contribution to lunch expenses
- Some relocation support is offered by ILGA World: this includes limited financial support for moving expenses and, if applicable, obtaining a work permit for the successful candidate.
The successful candidate
- has at least 3 years of direct experience in advocacy and/or policy work on local, national, regional or international levels
- has at least one year of engaging with UN human rights mechanisms, preferably direct experience with SDGs and/or UN Special Procedures
- has some experience with programme and project coordination, including planning, budgeting and reporting
- must be able to communicate in English with high proficiency
- able to navigate challenging and sensitive environments
- shares ILGA World’s mission
The successful candidate ideally
- has a degree in Law, Human Rights, Political Science, International Relations or any related field
- has some experience in developing and implementing training programmes
- has some experience in the field of business and human rights
- has good knowledge of a UN language other than English
- has direct experience with LGBTI or feminist activism
- has direct experience of working in the Global South contexts
- has relevant experience in working in international teams
Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
