Attending an ILGA World Conference is an extraordinary opportunity to join one of the largest global gatherings of LGBTI changemakers.

This gathering of ILGA World member organisations and other LGBTI human rights defenders and allies provides a great space to connect, learn, collaborate, coordinate, discuss and agree on future strategies for our global movement!

The deadline to apply for a scholarship for the 2024 ILGA World Conference has now expired. Thanks for your interest in taking part in the event: we received more than 1,000 applications!

Selected scholars will be informed by the end of January 2024, thus giving successful applicants time to work with ILGA World on securing a visa (if needed). Unsuccessful applicants will then have the chance to seek alternative funding and register later as paying participants.

Scholarships are offered to people who would otherwise be unable to attend the conference for financial reasons.  Only LGBTI human rights defenders and activists (including but not limited to representatives of ILGA World member organisations) are eligible to apply for scholarships.

A full scholarship will cover visa application, processing fees and associated costs, a roundtrip flight to Cape Town, shared accommodation in a double-occupancy room, conference registration fees, medical insurance, and a small additional daily allowance for incidentals.

Partial scholarships will also be available: if you can partly fund your participation in the 2024 ILGA World Conference, this will allow us to bring more activists to Cape Town. Only a limited number of partial scholarships will be granted.

ILGA World is committed to increasing accessibility for LGBTI communities in all their diversity. We give particular attention to the diversity of representation of delegates to the event – whether it is in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, sex characteristics, culture, religion, language, ethnic origin, race, colour, as well as in terms of age, disability, visual or hearing ability, HIV status, financial means, family composition/responsibilities, and more.

This year the scholarship evaluation will focus on bringing LGBTI activists to the conference – rather than the LGBTI community at large. Therefore, we encourage you to describe your work within LGBTI activism when applying for a scholarship.

We particularly welcome applications from activists belonging to groups under-represented within the LGBTI movement. Priority will be given to activists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific Islands. However, a limited number of scholarships will also be allocated to activists from Europe, North America, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

While more than one person may apply from any organisation, ILGA World usually only grants one scholarship per organisation. If two applications from one organisation reach the final stages of scholarship approval, we will leave it to the organisation to nominate their representative.

ILGA World only grants scholarships to LGBTI human rights defenders and activists. Other attendees – such as academics, students, journalists, representatives of corporate entities, medical professionals and representatives from mainstream human rights organisations – are encouraged to seek other opportunities to cover their participation.

ILGA World will take reasonable measures to ensure successful scholars can attend the conference.

However, please note that any scholarship granted will always remain conditional due to several factors, including but not limited to the situation of the global Covid-19 pandemic, ILGA World securing funding for scholarships, the applicant being granted a visa to access South Africa, the availability of a travel/flights within reasonable cost limits, the ability to get health travel insurance for the scholar, existing or future travel bans by governments, the reasonableness of existing or future vaccine, hygiene and quarantine restrictions. Accordingly, a scholarship may be revoked by ILGA World at any time.
