If you have ever been to an ILGA conference, you know how it feels like: these are moments of community, solidarity, and warmth — moments that our global LGBTI populations builds on to bring about change for everyone.

In November 2024, 1,450 persons from over 100 countries gathered in Cape Town, South Africa for the 31st ILGA World Conference — hosted by local organisations Iranti and Gender DynamiX under the theme “Kwa umoja we rise”, referencing a phrase in Swahili that celebrates unity and collective progress.

Returning to the African soil for the first time in 2025 years, the event was the largest in the history of the organisation. It brought together hundreds of LGBTI human rights defenders and development experts, policy makers, international human rights mechanisms experts, government representatives, researchers, journalists, funders, and allies— responding in global solidarity to the ongoing anti-rights pushback.
